In nematic liquid crystals subject to a sinusoidal electric field, critical behaviorsof fluctuations in the transition from equilibrium to chevrc>n texture states arestudied by using photon correlation method. Oscillatory fluctuations with onehalf of the period of the applied field are found to be strongly enhanced andbecome undamped as a threshold is approached. On the other hand, the thermallyexcited twist mode is also found to take no part in this transition. Thus the presentsystem seems to have a possibility of a hard mode instability, unlike the caseof the Williams domain with a soft mode instability.
