The effects of temperature on the rhythm of heartbeats of chick embryos arestudied at the 1 1 N 16 somite developmental stages. The rhythmic recurrence of heartbeats is found to be decreased in frequency as the temperature decreases. Thisbehavior is found to be described as PC<-CXp ( - W/kT), where T is the absolute tem-perature, k is the Boltzmann's constant and v is the frequency of heartbeats. Thevariabl W can be interpreted as the minimum activation energy necessary for oneheartbeat, the magnitude of which increases with the developmental stage.
