Reaction of active methylene compounds with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of chlorotrimethylsilane–sodium iodide–acetonitrile reagent gave <I>C</I>-arylmethylated products, the reduced condensation products, although the reaction either with aliphatic primary aldehydes or with isobutyraldehyde afforded alkylidenation products or dihydrofurans.
