The Darzens-type condensation of α-haloaldehyde (<B>2</B>) with methyl chloroacetate has been studied. The reaction of aliphatic α-chloroaldehydes afforded 4-chloro-2,3-epoxyalkanoates (<B>4</B>). The reaction of 2-bromo-2-methylpropanal (<B>2d</B>) with methyl chloroacetate gave α-chloro-γ,γ-dimethyl-<I>Δ</I><SUP>α,β</SUP>-butenolide (<B>7</B>) as a major product. α-Bromo-<I>n</I>-alkanal gave a mixture of many minor products.
