5,2′-Dihydroxy-6,8-dimethoxyflavone, which had been proposed as the structure of skullcapflavone I isolated from <I>Scutellaria baicalensis</I> Georgi, was synthesized from 2-hydroxy-3,5,6-trimethoxyacetophenone. However, the synthetic flavone was not identical with the natural flavone. Thus, two isomeric flavones, 5,2′-dihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone and 5,2′-dihydroxy-6,7-dimethoxyflavone, were prepared from the corresponding acetophenones; the structure of skullcapflavone I was confirmed to be 5,2′-dihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone.
