Speech discrimination by patients with cochlear implants (nucleus) through combined use of auditory and visual stimuli.

After undergoing three months of post-operative training, six Cochlear implant patients were evaluated for speech perception ability using specially designed video tapes. Data were analyzed from the view point of combined use of auditory and visual stimuli.<BR>Results demonstrated that; 1) when patients were tested using auditory and visual stimuli they were able to discriminate all levels of speech—monosyllables, words and sentences—better than when only auditory stimuli or visual stimuli were used ; 2 ) consonants were discriminated auditorially through manner of articulation and visually through place of articulation, resulting in higher articulation scores through combined use of complementary effects, as with the congenitally hearing-impaired ; 3) segmentation of the mora was detected reasonably well by auditory perception alone ; and 4) the postlingual patients in this study could understand speech through hearing more easily than through lip-reading.
