Change of histological and peritoneoscopic findings with the advance of alcoholic liver disease was investigated. Change of laboratory data was also evaluated. Thirty-one cases with alcoholic liver disease consisting of 25 cases who continued to drink and 6 cases who stopped to drink were selected for this study. The following results were obtained.<BR>1) Histology of the liver in 25 cases who continued to drink was non-cirrhotic in 19 cases and cirrhotic in the remaining 9 cases. Six cases out of 19 cases whose histology was noncirrhotic progressed to cirrhosis. The first histology of these six cases showed alcoholic hepatitis in 4 cases and fibrosis in 2 cases. Two cases out of four cases whose histology showed micronodular liver cirrhosis in the first histology advanced to moderate or macro-nodular liver cirrhosis in the succeeding histology.<BR>2) Fat deposition demonstrated in the cases who stopped to drink disappeared after one month's abstinence. Although fibrosis was unchanged, infiltration of inflammatory cells was reduced in the succeeding histology after 2 or 3 months' abstinence.<BR>3) In the early stage of alcoholic liver disease, liver was thickened and its surface was smooth. As liver damage progressed, surface of the liver became wavy and finely granulated. As it further progressed, small nodules were formed and became greater in height and width.<BR>4) In laboratory data, SGOT/SGPT ratio tended to increase with the progress of liver damage in alcoholic liver disease.
