Non-A, non-B acute hepatitis after needle-stick accident.

Risk factors associated with acquisition of non-transfusion acute viral hepatitis in 452 cases during 1974 to 1985 were analyzed. Five of 209 cases (2.3%) with non-A, non-B (NANB) acute hepatitis had episodes of needle-stick accident, and the latent periods in these 5 cases from the accidents to the onset of hepatitis were 31 to 51 days. Two cases had jaundice, and 3 had abnormal serum transaminase levels over 6 months. Liver biopsies revealed findings compatible with acute hepatitis in all of the 5 cases.<BR>One case contracted probable double infections of hepatitis non-A, non-B virus and hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV infection was blocked by the administration of hepatitis B immunoglobulin, resulting in the development of NANB hepatitis alone.<BR>Gamma-globulin preparation was given to one case immediately after needle-stick accident, however failed to prevent NANB acute hepatitis.<BR>All of the 5 cases incriminated for the development of accidental needle stick NANB hepatitis in above-mentioned 5 patients had abnormal transaminase levels. They were suspected to be NANB hepatitis virus carriers.
