Leomyoma of the Rectum-Report of a Case Died of Reccurrence Nine Years After Extirpation.

A 52-year-old woman visited our clinic with a complaint of anal tumor. The rectal digital examination revealed a hen's egg sized tumor 6cm above the anal ring. Specimen obtained at the extirpation showed marked cellularity, but cellular atypism was minor and mitoses were few. Differencial diagnosis of benignancy or malignancy was difficult and histological diagnosis was leiomyosarcoma. Four years later local reccurence was found. Abdominoperineal resection was performed but liver metastase were present. Treatment with Adriacin and Picibanil was not effective and she died 9year after the extirpation. In smooth muscle tumors of the rectum, differentiation between benignacy vs.. malignancy is often difficult. Radical surgery and close follow-up are mandatory in those patients.
