Effect of Passive Smoking on Blood Pressure in SHR:Application of a Newly Established Method for Measuring Indirect Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure in Unanesthetized Rats

The newly established method for measuring systolic and diastolic blood pressures indirectly at the tail artery in rats without anesthesia was confirmed to be useful for recording the variations of blood pressures which corresponded closely to systolic and diastolic blood pressures directly recorded through a catheter implanted into a femoral artery. This new method can be utilized for blood pressure alterations in conscious rats.The effect of passive smoking was analyzed by an experimental study using SHR. The transient pressor response accompanied by bradycardia is considered to be induced mainly by the nasopharyngeal reflex evoked by the smoke, rather than by the pharmacological effect of nicotine itself.The greater response by passive smoking in SHR suggests that also in humans the hypertensive may be more affected by the nonspecific effect of passive smoking than the normotensive.
