The effect of a hydrolysate of human placenta on baby hamster kidney-21/C-13 cells was investigated. By ion exchange column chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography, the active principle was shown to be a basic amino acid, which on the basis of the fast atom bomberdment mass spectral and amino acid analyses, was identified as δ-hydroxylysine. The proliferation of baby hamster kindey-21/C-13 cells in the presence of δ-hydroxylysine was shown to be 1.50±0.21 times that of the control at a concentration of 100 μg/ml.
