A monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory assay was conducted by using EtOAc and water soluble portions of MeOH extracts of 24 medicinal plants from Southeast Asia Ethylacetate extracts of Pertusadina eurhyncha, Symplocos odoratissima, Pangium edule and Blumea bcdsanifera were shown to have potent inhibitory activity against rat brain mitochondrial MAO. Scopoletin and noreugenin were isolated as active principles from the bark of P. eurhyncha, and these compounds inhibited both MAO-A and B in similar extents.
