Estimate of Berberine Content in Coptis Rhizome by Utilizing Inhibitory Activity of Berberine on Mouse Plasma Alkaline Phosphatase

Berberine in Coptis rhizome was found to inhibit the alkaline phosphatase activity in isolated mouse plasma. Accordingly, it was possible to estimate the approximate berberine content in Coptis rhizome by measurement of this inhibitory activity. The accuracy of this estimate was confirmed by comparison with high-performance liquid chromatographic estimation of berberine. Therefore, this method may be useful for the evaluation of this crude drug or for the analysis of berberine in the blood of animals.
