In this study, we investigated the effect of 44 Mongolian plants on the nitric oxide (NO) production in mouse peritoneal macrophages elicited by bacillus Calmette-Guerin and in vitro stimulated by lipopolysaccharide. The NO production was significantly (50%<) inhibited by Schizonepeta multifida, Halenia corniculata, Sophora alopecuroides and Artemisia sieversiana, and moderately (30-49 %) inhibited by Stellera chamaejasme, Artemisia vulgaris, Pleurospermum uralensis, Senecio hexapetale, Geranium pratense, Leontopodium ochroleucum and Urtica cannabina at a concentration of 100μg/ml. As NO is one of the critical mediators in inflammation, these plants might be promising sources for anti-inflammatory agents.
