Simultaneous Determination of Dehydrocostuslactone and Costunolide in Saussureae Radix by High Performance Liquid Chromatography

A new simple method for simultaneous determination of dehydrocostuslactone and costunolide in Saussureae Radix was established by using high-performance liquid chromatography. The two compounds in an extract from the crude drug were efficiently separated within 20 min on a μ-Bondapak C_<18> column using a methanol-water mixture (65:35) as an eluent. Their quantity may be estimated based on the peak height, and this method was found to be applicable to the evaluation of commercially available Saussureae Radix samples.
