Physiological effects and metabolic fate of ethyl α-D-glucoside (α-EG) were investigated using Wistar rats. Rats were received tap water, 10% α-EG, 10% glucose, 10% ethanol or 1O% glucose plus 1O% ethanol solution as drinking solution for 30 days, respectively. Drink intake of the rats fed α-EG and glucose solution was significantly higher. Body weight gain in the rats fed α-EG solution showed significant lower value. α-EG was detected from serum and urine of the rats fed α-EG. Serum concentration of HDL- and total cholesterol and hepatic cholesterollevel in the rats fed α-EG were higher than those of the other groups. In conclusion, orally ingested α-EG was absorbed into blood as its intact form, and was excreted in urine without complete re-absorption in renal tubule. Furthermore this study suggested that α-EG increased might affect cholesterol metabolism.
