In the course of screening for new antibiotics which are active against established cell line of L1210 mouse leukemia, we found that a strain of Streptomyces lavendulae, designated as No 314, exhibited cytotoxicity to the line of tumor in addition to the production of streptothricin. Satellite antibiotics named mimosamycin and saframycin A to E have been obtained from the organic solvent extract of the cultured filtrate. In these antibiotics, the structure of mimosamycin[C_<12>H_<11>NO_4] was determined as formula 1. In this report structural elucidation of saframycin A, B and C and the antitumor activity of saframycin A will be discussed. ^<13>C NMR and mass spectral data of saframycin A, B and C indicated that these antibiotics have the same carbon skeleton; dimeric structures of mimosamycin(1). The structure of saframycin C[C_<29>-H_<33>N_3O_9] was established by an X-ray crystallographic study of its hydrobromide. From these results, the structures of saframycin B [C_<28>H_<31>N_3O_8] and A[C_<29>H_<30>N_4O_8] were determined as 14-desmethoxy-saframycin C and 21-cyanosaframycin B, respectively. Saframycin B, C and A therefore have the structures depicted in 3, 4 and 8 or their antipodes.
