Fabrication of SmCo_5 double-layered recording media with high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy(PMR media,The 8th Asian Symposium on Information Storage Technology (ASIST-8))

We fabricated SmCo_5 double-layered perpendicular magnetic recording media with very high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for realizing ultra high density recording. It was found that a Ru buffer layer between a Cu/Ti intermediate layer and a Co-Zr-Nb SUL was effective to obtain high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in SmCo_5 double-layered media. The Ru buffer layer suppressed the interdiffusion between the Cu/Ti intermediate layer and the Co-Zr-Nb SUL. As a result, the Cu/Ti intermediate layer in the double-layered media with the Ru buffer layer promoted the crystallization of SmCo_5 and its preferred orientation, as that in the single-layered media did.
