The structures of the intermediate θ' phase in Al-4% Cu and Al-4% Cu-0.03% Sn alloys have been studied using the 200 lattice image technique. The lattice image shows a complicated spacing of white fringes with a two layer period trend in the matrix 200 lattice fringes. By analysing the optical transform of the micrograph, the contrast behavior is interpreted as the superposition of the lattice image of the precipitate θ' and the moire pattern due to θ' and the matrix. For Al-4% Cu-0.03% Sn alloys, small circular regions of β-Sn are found at the edge of the precipitates θ', the orientation relation being (100)_<β-Sn>//(111)_α.
