Oblique Tow Simulation by a Finite-Volume Method

A finite-volume solution method for the Navier-Stokes equation is developed for the oblique tow simulation. A curvilinear, boundary-fitted coordinate system is generated in a wide computational domain that includes the full length of a ship. The subgrid-scale turbulence model is employed so that the complicated 3D vortical flow, which may determine the forces and moments, is well resolved. The results are compared with the experimental results of a bulk carrier model, a tanker model and a slender hull. Satisfactory agreement is obtained for the lateral force and yawing moment.
