Detection of Electron Beam Orbits in a Tokamak Configuration with External Helical Magnetic Field

Modification of electron orbits in a tokamak with external helical fields was measured by the boxcar-photography using a fluorescent rod. The movement of puncture points of the electron orbits was clearly detected when the direction and phase of perturbed helical fields were changed. Measured orbits agree.d with those calculated by orbit tracing code in which external helical field was considered exactly using the Biot-Savart law. The distortion of electron orbits caused by the perturbed helical fields had an energy dependence of electrons, when the helical field of a high poloidal mode number was applied. The energy dependence is the same as that invoked in the theory to explain the reduction of runaway electron diffusion in stochastic magnetic fields.
