Effects of a Plant Growth Regulator, Prohexadione Calcium (BX-112), on the Elongation of Rice Shoots Caused by Exogenouslyl Applied Gibberellins and Helminthosporol, Part II

Prohexadione calcium (BX-112) is a novel plant growth regulator that inhibits the late stages of the biosynthesis of gibberellins in plants. Fourteen kinds of gibberellin, helminthosporol and helminthosporic acid were applied simultaneously with BX-112 to rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.), and their growth-promoting activities in terms of shoot elongation were examined. The growth-promoting activities of GA_1, GA_4, GA_<18>, GA_<22>, GA_<23>, GA_<38>, helminthosporol and helminthosporic acid were not inhibited by BX-112, but those of GA_5, GA_9, GA_<15>, GA_<19>, GA_<20>, GA_<31>, GA_<44> and GA_<53> were inhibited. These results suggest that 3β-hydroxylation is an important and necessary step in the biosynthesis of gibberellins that promote shoot elongation in rice seedlings. The weak promotion of shoot elongation by GA_<22> in the presence of BX-1 12 suggests that the effect of a hydroxyl group at C-18 of GA_<22> might be able to mimic the effect of the 3β-hydroxyl group of GA_1. Helminthosporol and helminthosporic acid may promote the shoot elongation of rice by mimicking physiologically active gibberellins and not by stimulating their biosynthesis.
