Mating sequence and behavioural repertoire of Pieris napi nesis were quite similar to those of P. napi japonica except that only one male of the latter exhibited hovering. Ethological isolation between nesis and japonica was not demonstrated : Males and females of the two subspecies behaved to individuals of the opposite sex of different subspecies in a similar manner to those of the own subspecies ; there were no significant differences between intra-and inter-subspecific mating in the duration from the male's approach to the beginning of nuptial flight and in the duration of copulation ; mated females received a spermatophore irrespective of their mating partner.
