Mating behaviour of Pieris rapae, P. napi, P. melete, and P. canidia is described on the basis of observations performed in the outdoor cage. Females of the four species exhibit mate-avoiding behaviour against the courting males before they become receptive attitude. The mate-avoiding behaviour is not species-specific and lasts longer in melete and canidia than in napi and rapae. In rapae this behaviour is frequently absent. Males of rapae and napi show no specialized courtship display except for the zig-zag to-and-fro manner of flight to the flying female. Males of melete and canidia exhibit elaborate species-specific courtship, "hovering" and "caressing" respectively, although such courtship is not indispensable for the successful copulation of both species. The mating sequence after the female becomes quiet is very similar in all four species.
