Photoperiodic Response of Four Japanese Species of the Genus Pieris (Lepidoptera : Pieridae)

Experiments were made to investigate the photoperiodic response of four Japanese species of the genus Pieris, P. rapae, P. canidia, P. melete and P. napi, derived from northern parts of Kyushu including Tsushima. The larvae and pupae were reared in different photoperiods ranging from LD 9 : 15 to 15 : 9hr at 20±1℃. The critical photoperiod of the progeny of summer-form females was about 12.5hr in canidia and about 13hr in melete and napi. In rapae a few pupae did not diapause even at a short photoperiod of LD 9 : 15hr. Except for rapae the "maternal effect" was exerted on the response and the progeny of the spring-form tended to show a shorter critical photoperiod. The mean duration of larval stage of each species was longer in the diapause group than in the nondiapause one. The pupal dimorphism was closely associated with the occurrence of diapause, but its expression differed among the species. It was suggested that the very long breeding season of rapae is partly attributable to the relatively low incidence of diapause even in short photoperiods.
