Comparative Morphology of the Pupal Forewing Tracheation in Some Japanese Species of the Family Pieridae (Lepidoptera)

The pupal forewing tracheation of 18 Japanese species belonging to 10 genera of the Pieridae was described. Although the pupal tracheation sometimes showed intra-specific variation, the typical tracheal pattern was constant within every genus. The "basic plan" of the pupal forewing tracheation in the family was inferred to have the following 15 primary tracheae : Sc, R_1, R_2, R_3, R_4, R_5, M_1, M_2, M_3, CuA_1, CuA_2, CuP, 1A, 2A, and 3A. The deviation from the "basic plan" is as follows : 1) the loss of at least one primary trachea other than Sc ; 2) the development of secondary tracheae ; 3) the extreme proximity or adherence of adjacent tracheae ; 4) modification of radial trachea to the so-called "pseudo-pectinate type" branching ; 5) the apical or basal shift of tracheal branching points. The loss of median trachea is always compensated for by the development of secondary radial trachea. Each genus of the Pieridae examined here possesses one or more unique apomorphies of the pupal wing tracheation. The pupal wing tracheation can be generally used as one of the valuable systematic characters.
