Oxygen Absorption and Oxide Inclusion of Iron Weld Metal during Arc Welding

Pure iron plates were welded by using pure iron electrode wire in a controlled arc atmosphere. The effects of the welding conditions and the oxidizing gas partial pressure in the welding atmospheres of Ar-O_2 and Ar-CO_2 on the oxygen content of the iron weld metals were systematically studied. Inclusions in the iron weld metal were observed and analyzed. The inclusions were mainly iron oxide, and they increased with an increased oxygen content of the iron weld metal. Using the results obtained and thermodynamic data, the behavior of oxygen absorption into the iron weld metal was discussed.
