Effects of Nitrogen and Titanium on Mechanical Properties and Annealed Structure of Ar-N_2 Gas Metal Arc Welded Copper

Pure copper plates were welded with pure copper and copper itanium alloy electrode wires using argon-nitrogen gas mixture shieldings. The effects of the nitrogen percentage in the shielding gas and the titanium content of the electrode wire on mechanical properties and annealed structures of the weld metal were systematically examined. The Vickers hardness increases with the titanium content of electrode wire. The yield stress and the tensile strength of the weld metal increase with the titanium content of electrode wire, while the elongation and the reduction of area show maxima at titanium content of about 0.5% in the electrode wire. The tensile properties of the weld metal don't depend on N_2% in the shielding gas. Precipitation of β' phase is observed in some of the weld metals annealed at 573∿1173 K for 3.6ks. The precipitation is the most remarkable after annealing at 700∿800 K, and the amount of β' phase increases with an increase of the titanium content of electrode wire and with a decrease of N_2 in the shielding gas. The Vickers hardness increases with the amount of β' phase.
