Absorption of Oxygen into Iron Weld Metal during Arc Welding

Pure iron was welded using pure iron electrode wire in a controlled fire atmosphere. Effects of the welding conditions and the oxidizing gas partial pressure in the welding atmospheres of Al-O_2 and Ar-CO_2 on the oxygen contents of the iron weld metals were systematically studied. The oxygen contents of the weld metals decreased with an increasing welding current and increased with the arc voltage at low oxidizing gas partial pressure. The oxygen contents increased with the oxygen partial pressure increased up to about 0.010 MPa, and then reached a constant value of about 0.24 wt.%. The behavior of oxygen absorption into weld metal was discussed using thermodynamic data obtained from an equilibrium study
