Microscopic structures of SUS304L austenitic stainless steel GTA welds were studied mainly by transmission electron microscopy. The ferrite morphology in the weld metal is lathy or acicular near the bead surface, lacy, vermicular or skeletal in the central region, and vermicular or globular near the fusion boundary. The local difference of the ferrite morphology depends on the alloy content and the cooling rate in the weld metal. Crystallographic characteristics of each type of ferrite morphology were examined. In the heat affected zone, the degree of recovery of the dislocation sub-structures was shown to reduce with the distance from the fusion boundary. The Vickers hardness distribution can be explained by the groin size and the dislocation density.
