Using an arc atmosphere-controlling chamber, effects of welding conditions and welding atmospheres on the nitrogen absorption of the austenitic stainless steel weld metal during gas tungsten ate welding were studied in comparison with those on the iron weld metal. The temperatures of the stainless steel and the pure iron molten weld pools were about 1800 and 1900K, respectively. The nitrogen content of the stainless steel weld metal decreased with an inn easing welding current, and hardly depended on the arc length, just as that of the iron weld metal. The nitrogen content of the stainless steel weld metal increased with the travel speed, while that of the iron weld metal did not. The nitrogen content of the stainless steel weld metal increased with the nitrogen partial pressure at low nitrogen partial pressure and was constant at high nitrogen partial pressure in a nitrogen-argon gas mixture atmosphere, as well as that of the iron weld metal. The nitrogen absorption of the stainless steel weld metal was discussed with equilibrium data.
