Surface Changes in the Mouse Third Ventricular Wall during the Estrous Cycle

The surface of the third ventricular wall of the sexually mature femal mouse is subdivided into 8 areas (A, B, C1, C2, C3, Da, Dp and E) (Keino et al., 1981). Each area was observed in detail under scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Some long fine fibers run on the third ventricular wall in the C3, C2, C1 and B areas during metestrus, diestrus and proestrus. They are partly swollen only in the C3 area during estrus.The swollen parts contain many dense cored vesicles, microvesicles and some mitochondria. They connect with the apical surface of the tanycytes. The tanycytes show some dense materials near the inner surface of their plasma membranes to which the swollen parts are connected. Except in the C3 area, no alterations of the surface structures were recognized during the estrous cycle.
