The surface structure of the third ventricular wall in albino mice was studied with scanning and transmission electron microscopes. It was subdivided into the following eight parts. A : the area which occupies the upper 2/3 with long cilia extending into the lumen of the ventricle, B : the area with clustered cilia (transitional zone), C1 : the upper area of the lower 1/3 having hexagonal structures with numerous microvilli, C2 : the middle area with extended apical blebs, C3 : the lower area with a few apical blebs and a few microvilli adjacent to the median eminence, Da : the area nearby the optic chiasma with aggregated large apical blebs, Dp : the area bordering on the infundibular stalk with large apical blebs, and E : the luminal surface of the infundibular stalk. In young female mice (around 30 days after birth) with closing vagina, areas A, B, C1, Da and E could be clearly distinguished from each other by their characteristic apical structures using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Numerous hexagonal units were also observed in the area between B and the median eminence. However, no marked structural differences were recognized between C2 and C3.
