Some heavy metals can be visualized by the sulfide-silver method of Timm (1961) in which the metalsulfide formed is developed physically with silver nitrate. In the brain, the hippocampal formation is atained intensely with this method, suggesting the localization of zinc. The stainability of this region was reported to become weakened or even disappear by electrically-induced seizures in the rat. In this paper, the mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus), which exibits a spontaneous seizure similar to human epilepsy, was stimulated electrically with an ear lobe electrode or mechanically by briefly suspending hanging the body. In the control gerbil brain, the hippocampus showed the characteristic pattern of Timm staining. The staining was weak in only one case of the 8 animals treated electrically. No change in stainabillity was observed in the animals that underwent spontaneous (mechanically-elicited) seizures.
