The Mongolian gerbil(Meriones unguiculatus) exhibits a spontaneous seizure similar to human epilepsy(Loskota et al., 1972). Its frequency differs from animal to animal. The relationship between the frequency of the seizure and the concetration and the biochemical properties of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor in the hippocampus, a region responsible for seizures in epilepsy, was studied. The parameters studied were the concetration of the receptor in the various brain regions, its age-assocoated change, the affinity con-stant to ^3H-quinuclidinyl benzilate(QNB), the receptor occupancy curves of the agonist and the thermostability of ^3H-QNB binding capacity. No remarkable differences were observed in these parameters of the muscarinic receotor between gerbils with a low frequency of seizures and those with a high frequency. Biochemical properties of the muscarinic receptor in the gerdil brain were similar to those in other rodents, rats and mice, but, unlike these other rodents, the concentration of the receptor in the striatum was lower than that in the hippocampus or cetebral cortex.
