Ultrastructural Study of the Herring Bodies in the Caudal Median Eminence of the Mouse

The caudal median eminence of the normal mouse contains many Herring bodies (5 to 600 μm in width). Many seem to be terminal, and were found mainly in the external zone, but some with (or without) myelin sheaths may be nonterminal Herring bodies, and were observed in the internal zone. Type I Herring bodies, which were present but rare in the internal zone, mainly contain neurosecretory granules. Type II Herring bodies were numerous and were characterized by dense bodies, autophagic vacuoles, autophagic bodies, lamellar bodies, and mitochondria. Type III Herring bodies, which were found in the external zone, but also rare, include dense lamellar structures and autophagic bodies mostly in the priphery, and frequently, microtubules in the center. However, no typical type III Herring bodies with prominent tubular formations were observed. The rare gigantic type II Herring bodies in the internal zone were ensheathed by several electron dense layers, presumably degenerating myelin sheaths. Some very large type II Herring bodies in the external zone contain a few small degenerating type I Herring bodies, which suggests one way large degenerating bodies are formed. Phagocytotic activity by glial cells is rather frequent in the external zone. Such glial cells may engulf a few degenerating Herring bodies as will as small normal axons.
