Normally the colonies of Pristomyrmex pungens are inhabited exclusively by the workers. The queens has so far not been found and the male is rarely produced. In the experimental culture the workers were roughly grouped into two classes : intranidal workers with rather developed ovaries and extranidal ones with less developed ones. All the pupae derived from the worker-born eggs in uniparental manner were workers. These facts suggest that the population in P. pungens colonies is sustained by laying workers, and that there is a labour division among workers (egg-laying vs. the other tasks). Another interesting fact is that there are two types among workers in ovarian structure : ovaries with a pair of ovarioles and those with two pairs. Workers with two pairs of ovarioles are significantly larger than those with only one pair.
