430 Preparation and Mechanical Properties of Carbon Fiber Reinforced AZ91D Magnesium Alloy Composite Fabricated by Squeeze Casting Process

Carbon fiber reinforced magnesium alloy (CFRMg) is commercially attractive to practical structural applications due to their high specific mechanical properties. In this study, the optimum fabricating condition of squeeze casting was examined. Then the mechanical properties of obtained carbon fiber reinforced AZ91D composites was investigated. In order to increase compressive strength of the preform and prevent each carbon fiber from contacting, sodium silicate solution was used as a binder. SiC particles are also used as spacers in the preform. Neither preform deformation nor non-infiltrated area was found in the obtained composite at the condition, which is 873 K pre-heating temperature of the preform and 94 mm/s infiltration rate. However, the flexural strength of the composite has wide scatters between 226 and 1945 MPa. It is found that the higher uniformly of fibers leads to the higher strength.
