The survival probability o(A ) is studied for the one-dimensional contact process.An approximate function h"'(A ) for o (A ) is o btained ; a partial stationary conditionis used to determine h"'(C,) for small sets C,'s and then it is extended to all finitesubsets A of Z ' by the Markov extension. It is proved that h"'(A) gives an upperbound for o(A) in the parameter region where the infection rate 2 is greater thanGriffeath's lower bound for )., i.e. 2>8(1-F-V'57).
