Singlet Ground State and Excitation Gap in the Double Spin Chain System KCuCl_3

The magnetic properties of the S -172 dotrble spin chain system KCuCl3 have been investi-gated by susceptibility meastrrernents tmsing single crystals, It is found that the susceptibilitiesfor three different external field directions exhibit broad rnaxirna at around 30 K and decreaseexponentially to zero with decreasing temperattrre. This result indicates that the ground stateof KCuCl3 is nonrnagnetic and there is a finite gap in its excitation spectrum. This behavior isattributable to the quantuna effect characteristic of the double spin chain. The structure of theexchange couplings in the dotrble chain is disctnssed. Applying the recent spin ladder theory, weestimate the magnitude of the excitation gap to be 4 /k3 :: 35 K.
