An X-ray diffractio?? study has been carried otxt for claaracterizing tl?e structture oftl?e amorpltous germanium-sulphur system. An esseuttial feature of tlve total struc-tural functions, structure factors and pair distril>ution fuuactioxts is uncltanged iua theregion betweexa 40 and 15 at.% Go. It is also fccund tlaat tlaeir xaumber derasitics arelinearly increased on going from 40 to 15 at.% Ge axad tlae nuxatber density ofcrystalline GeS. is considerably larger tltan that of anaorplvous GeS. in wlticla tltere in-volve many vacant sites. The partial structural ftv nctions of a, (q) autd g, ( z') have alsobeen estimated from measured total structural d;tta using an assumption of their con-cezttration jndepezadence. A possible naodel v'a.'; p?'oj>osed for explaining the shortrange ordering in a?norpltous Ge-S.
