Effects of the hybridization between the 4f and valence band states on the multipletstructures in La 3d and 4d core X-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) are discussed forLaF, LaCl, and La.0, on the basis of the Anderson model considering the multipletsarising from the interaction between a 4f electron and a core hole described by theSlater integrals. An interpretation for the apparent success of the previous analyses ofthe 3d-XPS excluding the multiplet effect is given, and the necessity of including it inthe analyses of the 4#-XPS is discussed.
