Temperature Dependence of 2p-Core X-Ray Absorption Spectra in 3d Transition-Metal Compounds

The temperature dependence of the V and Co 27t-core X-ray absorption spectra (2pXAS) in VF. and CoF., respectively, are discussed on the basis of an atomic model in-cluding multiplet-splitting, 3d spin-orbit interaction and crystalline field. The recenthigh-resolution 2p XAS data for VF, and CoF. are shown to be well explained byassuming the crystalline field with cubic symmetry in the former and with the orthorhombic (D,..) symmetry in the latter and by assumning T = 300 K for both systems.For CoF, the temperature dependence of the Co 2p XAS for the Iinearly polarized incident beams both parallel and perpendicular to thcc c axis is predicted to be muchmore remarkable than that for unpolarized light.
