Orbital Magnetic Moments of CoO and FeO and Isotropic Co and Fe L_<2,3> Absorption Spectroscopy

The relationship between the magnetic state of divalent Co and Fe ions in the octahedralcrystal field and the isotropic L2,3 X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) spectrtrrn is discussedwith switching on and off the 3d spin-orbit interaction on the basis of an atomic ruatrltipletcalculation. The existence of orbital naagnetic ttaonuent M..5 of x l#B is shown to ttaanifestespecially in L2 region as a narrow spectrtmnu compared with that for M...5 : O for both tons, Adeviation of L3 : L2 braching ratio frona the statistical ratio 2 is also shown to be closely relatedwith the existence of A1..5 for both tons. In the light of our findings, the zaaagnetic state of bothions in CoO and FeO is discussed. The role of isotropic core XAS as a raaeans to determine A1..5in systeuaas with no net magnetization is stressed.
