The paramagnetic Curie temperature θ_p is measured for the alloys Gd(Al_<1-x>Cu_x)_2 and Gd(Al_<1-x>Ni_x)_2. The values of θ_p plotted versus the number of conduction electrons n_0 are found on a single curve. The decrease of θ_p with decreasing n_0 is in contradiction with the prediction made by Buschow et al. on the basis of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida theory. A reinterpretation of the result based on the same theory is given.
