Effect of Pressure on the Thermal Expansion of Mixed-Valence Compound CeNi

Thermal expansion of mixed-valence compound CeNi has been measured underhydrostatic pressure up to 15 kbar. It is found that the thermal expansion coefficientcv(7') is strongly anisotropic, reflecting the noncubic (orthorhombic) crystal structureand is affected largely by applying pressure because of an instability of 4f electrons inthis compound. A contribution to cx from the valence instability, cv., is estimated.
