Interaction of the TO-phonon with the Acoustic Phonons near the Phase Transition Temperature in Pb_<1-x>Ge_xTe

The phase transition in Pb) ,Ge.Te with .v=O.03'x0.I was studied by Ramanscattering and ultrasonic velocity measurements. Below T. the frequency ofthe A.-mode is l.99x]0"(7'. -I)rad'/sec' and the f-mode 5.32x10"(7',. -T)rad'/sec' for ,X'=0.05. The ultrasonic velocity shows a step-like behaviors at T..Just above T. the normal elastic moduli are C..=]l.0XI0", C..=O.O2X10"and Cq.=1.35X10" in dyn/cm'. The steps are JC..=l.52XlO", AC..-0.20xI0" and AC.q=O.26x10" in dyn/cm'. The parameters of the freeenergy expansion were calculated by using the above results together with thedata of the shear strain. The order parameter, the spontaneous strain and theTO-phonon frequency above T. which were estimated from thus obtained parame-ters are consistent with the results experimentally obtained satisfactorily.
