Observation of Local Modes in Pb_<1-x>Sn_xTe Doped with Group III Elements (In and Ga)

Pb) ,Sn,Te crystals doped with group III elements (In and Ga) exhibit ab-sorption bancls at 160 cm ' and 187 cm ' in the far-infrared region with In-doped and Ga-doped samples, respectively, which are almost independent oftemperatures and tin compositions. These bands are ascribecl to the local vibra-tional mocles of Nut and Ga tons and the ratio of the frequencies could be explainedby a simple XY5 molecular model.
