Dissociative Excitation of Water Molecule by Electron Impacts. : I. General Survey and the Born Approximation

• Emission cross sections are evaluated in the Born approximation for thedissociative excitation processes of H.0 by electron impacts, accompanied bythe OH violet band, or the Lyman-cx emission. Wave functions are from theHatano-Nomura-Tanaka basis set as well as the Lin-Duncan set. The choice ofwave functions strongly affects the magnitude of the cross section, but hardlyaffects its dependence on the incident electron energy. For the OH band, maincontribution comes from the transition 3ag-+4ag, and the electron exchangecollision should be considered. For the Lyman-a emission, to which a number ofsuperexcited states may correlate, it is found that the contribution of the transitionlb.-+6a.(=4sa.) is dominant, while ones pf lb.-+3da., 3da. and 3db. the next.The calculated cross section is different from the experimental one at low energiesof the incident electron, but is in accord with the experimental one at high energies.Alternative comparison is made on the optical and the generalized oscillatorstrengths.
