Ferromagnetic Relaxation in the System Mn_xFe_<3-x>O_4

Resonance experiments have been made on single crystals Mn_xFe_<3-x>O_4 (x=1.03 ∼1 and ∼0.8) in the temperature region 1.8-300K at 9.3 and 35.1GHz. It is shown that the linewidth maximum which appears around 10-20K for x>1 can be interpreted neither in terms of the re-orientation effect of Jahn-Teller distortions of Mn^<3+> ions nor of the intra-atomic slow relaxation effect among the spin states of Mn^<3+> ion. The effect of Fe^<2+> ion which belongs to a strongly coupled pair Mn^<3+>-Fe^<2+> is considered as more proper for the origin of this maximum. For thin disk samples of relatively high conductivities, the linewidth does not exhibit any peaks in the temperature region 77-300K where a variety of peaks has been observed for spherical samples, but a rather broad maximum is observed near 50K. This is ascribed to the valence-exchange relaxation between Fe^<2+> and Fe^<3+> ions.
